News from Philadelphia:.
The honourable congress have appointed George Washington, esquire, of Virginia, generalissimo of the America forces . . . Last Tuesday evening Thomas Jefferson, esquire, arrived here from Virginia, to attend the congress, agreeable to his election, in the room of the Hon. Peyton Randolph, esquire. He was attended by Dr. McClurg.

Dr. James McClurg attended William and Mary with Thomas Jefferson and after graduation studied medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland. He returned to practice medicine in Williamsburg, and in 1776 he was chosen to direct the local military hospital. He purchased his Williamsburg home on Francis St. from John Parke Custis, stepson of George Washington. McClurg later represented Virginia at the United States Constitutional Convention.
