About this entry:

Lord Dunmore, the last Royal Governor of Virginia, left Williamsburg in June 1775, but he prowled the rivers of Virginia and raided rebellious planters along those rivers. He amassed an army to get a foothold on land at Great Bridge, southwest of Norfolk. After his defeat he retired again to ships off Norfolk. Fearing the patriot army, the tories of Norfolk left with him. He would celebrate the Christmas of 1776 back in Britain.
