Today in the 1770s: September 18

WILLIAMSBURG, September 18, 1777.
I have in my possession a pair of chased Gold Studs, which were brought to my house by a negro girl, who says she found them in the street. They appear to have been much worn, and have a small stamp on the bottom of each. Any person who has lost them will apply to WILLIAM RUSSELL.

About this entry:

A young girl found embossed gold cufflinks and took them to merchant and solid citizen, William Russell, to find the owner. Russell seems suspicious that someone would lose both cufflinks in the street - the girl might have been aware that the pair was stolen and might have been trying to get them back to the rightful owner without implicating anyone.
