Casimir Pulaski fought a losing battle against the Russians in Poland; declared an outlaw by the Russians, he was in Paris in 1775. He came to the attention of Benjamin Franklin and departed for America in 1777 to fight with the American army. He was on his way to support General Benjamin Lincoln in Charleston. The British forces withdrew to Savannah. During the siege of Savannah, he received a fatal gunshot wound. He was thirty-one years old.
