The practice of inhaling snuff, or powdered tobacco, in Scotland and France became popular in the early 17th Century, before it took hold in England. Throughout the 18th century it was a universal practice. At first each quantity inhaled was fresh grated, and the coarser kinds were later known as rappee. Soon one could purchase snuff ready to sniff in shops such as Mr Dubois'. Macouba snuff came from Martinique.
