About this entry:
Robert Eden, an ambitious young man, distinguished himself in the British Army before marrying Caroline Calvert, sister of Lord Baltimore. His brother-in-law appointed him governor of Maryland and he arrived in the summer of 1769 to take over his post. He made friends with William Fitzhugh, a Virginian once in the House of Burgesses who moved to Maryland after his marriage several years prior. Lord Botetourt died a few weeks after this visit, on October 15, 1770.
