DEEP SPRING, September 11, 1776.
All the Officers, Cadets, and Soldiers of the 6th Regiment, now absent with Leave, are desired to join their Regiment immediately, although their limited Time of Absence should not be expired. Should any Soldier be so imprudent as to disobey this Order, they will be most assuredly looked on as Deserters, and treated accordingly.

*** Wanted in the 6th regiment, a Chaplain, who is allowed 33 1/2 Dollars per month, and two Rations per Day.

Col. Mordecai Buckner was appointed a colonel in the Sixth Virginia Regiment when it was created in January 1776. Nine months later he is summoning his troops for the march north to the Continental Army. Col. Buckner was not a success as a soldier: he was courtmartialed for cowardice the following year for quitting his post and not bringing his men into action January 23, 1777 near Morristown, New Jersey, the winter quarters of the Continental Army.
