About this entry:

Peyton Randolph, Speaker of the House of Burgesses, was elected Moderator of the Virginia Association, the group formed at the Raleigh Tavern after Governor Dunmore dissolved the Assembly in response to their protest against closing the port of Boston. Randolph had been elected President of the first Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia in 1774. The Virginia Convention that met in March 1775 organized the defense of the colony and a provisional government.
