Charles Carroll of Carrollton
(1737-1832)
The only Roman Catholic signer, Charles Carroll was a wealthy Maryland landowner and businessman. Although educated in Europe, his sympathies were firmly with the idea of American independence. He actively participated in many political groups devoted to organizing and governing the colonies as they became a new country.
In recognition of his war service, Carroll was elected to honorary membership in the Society of the Cincinnati, a group of former military officers.

Soon after the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the last surviving signer celebrated his 90th birthday. These medals were produced for close members of Carroll's family, and this exceptional example is still housed in its original presentation case.
