Safeguarding the Declaration of Independence Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore, Maryland

(December 1776 - March 1777)

Concerned by the approach of the British Army, Congress adjourned south to Baltimore toward the end of 1776. The records, including the Declaration, were moved by wagon. It was in Baltimore, after the victories at Princeton and Trenton, that the second printing of the Declaration was undertaken, this time with the names of the signers. By winter's end, Congress had returned to Philadelphia.
