Thomas Nelson to Col. Josiah Parker

June 8, 1781

Nelson's signature comes from a letter he wrote as Governor to Col. Josiah Parker at Smithfield responding to Parker's report that militia in the Portsmouth area have proven reluctant to take the field without direct orders from the Governor. Nelson authorizes Parker to call on local county lieutenants for the necessary men and to ". . . take the Command of & arrange them in such manner as you shallo think most dconducive to the Interest of the Sevice."
