Licensing and Publication

Publish or Exhibit Images from our Collection

Images of some of the material in our collections may be licensed for publication. Please fill out an application for permission to publish or permission to exhibit.

The use of museum objects is subject to curatorial review and approval. Occasionally, new photography is temporarily restricted for first-time use by Colonial Williamsburg. In addition, any photography of visitors or personnel that has not been model-released is restricted to in-house use.

Buying or streaming a CW recording through cdbaby.com does not grant rights to use the music clips for educational or commercial uses. Please contact Colonial Williamsburg to obtain permission for non-personal uses of various audio clips.

Presentation Use

Upon request, jpeg images sized for presentation use may be obtained for the following fees, subject to additional digitization or new photography fees if the item is not yet available in digital format. (See Reproduction Fee Schedule)

Additional information about fees and discounts:

  1. A research fee of $30.00 will apply if a request will involve more than one hour of picture research on the part of library staff.
  2. If five or more images are used in a single publication: 25% discount
  3. If a single image is used multiple times:
    1. 2nd use is 75% of the standard fee
    2. 3rd or more uses is 50% of the standard fee
  4. Wrap-around cover: add 25%
  5. Foreign lanuages: For Spanish (when used in less than 10% of the print run) add 25%. For each other foreign lanuage add 100%.
  6. Reprints: 75% of the fee in effect at time of request
  7. New editions: 75% of the fee in effect at time of request
  8. "Pick up" images from another publication (no media reproduction): $50 discount
  9. Last-minute cancellations: $50 fee
  10. Additional shipping and handling fees may apply.
