Description Newly installed President Jefferson declared war in 1801 against Tripolitan piracy in the Mediterranean, the first US war abroad against terrorism and with a Moslem nation that did not conclude until 20 years later. Naval Captain Stephen Decatur, Jr., Commodore Edward Preble, Lt. Andrew Sterett and Captain Samuel Barron and American diplomat William Eaton were key figures in opposing Tripoli's rapacious ruler Yusuf Karamanli.
