Title William Paterson's Shattered Dreams and The Darien Scheme
Issue Volume 36, Number 02, (CWJ, Spring 2014)
Description Failure of the ill-fated Darien Scheme, the doomed 1698 venture of the Company of Scotland Trading into Panama, in which only 300 of 2500 venturers survived, led to the bankruptcy of Scotland, the necessity of accepting England's bailout, and the loss of Scottish independence in 1707. The September 2014 referendum will allow Scots to decide if the Treaty of Union should end.
