Grim descriptions and accounts of the treatment of Revolutionary War prisoners illustrate why there were deaths of 35,800 in prisons cf. 6,800 in combat. Horrific conditions existed in NY prisons and prison ships, particularly as the British did not recognize the United States as a nation and regarded prisoners as traitors. Ethan Allen was captured, sent to England and eventually exchanged after 2.5 years. The British fared better in general than Americans though the latter conducted a "scorched earth" campaign against the Indians. Entire Issue of "Colonial Williamsburg Journal" is available as a pdf.
