President Thomas Jefferson clarified his advocacy of religious freedom in a letter to Connecticut's Danbury Baptist Association which, feeling persecuted by the established Congregationalists, had applied for his support,. His reply may have included the metaphor of "building a wall of separation between Church & State" later quoted in many Supreme Court opinions.
