Title The Sea Venture and Shakespeare's Tempest
Issue Volume 36, Number 01, (CWJ, Winter 2014)
Description The 1610 shipwreck of the resupply ship "Sea Venture" bound for Jamestown Virginia was most likely the origin of Shakespeare's favorite play "The Tempest", first performed in November 1611. Written sources describing the shipwreck included a poem by Robert Rich, a Virginia Company stockholder, the company's tract, and a pamphlet and letter by passengers Silvester Jourdain and William Strachey.
