Title Civil War Jamestown - Defending the Confederacy at Fort Pocahontas
Issue Volume 35, Number 04, (CWJ, Autumn 2013)
Description Fort Pocahontas, an earthen rampart, was dug by the Confederate States of America on the site of Historic Jamestown, to help guard the James River and the eastern approaches to the rebel capital Richmond. Jamestown Rediscovery archaeologist, led by William Kelso, have found Southern relics and a bomb-proof, an underground shelter against bombardment, while collecting 1.4 million artifacts. The site was dominated by wealthy William Orgain Allen's plantation of 300,000 acres. Allen raised troops at his own expense at the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, sacrificing his harvest to the building of defenses. Eventually General George McClellan seized Jamestown Island which remained under Union control until the war's end.
