Description |
The CCC (1933-1942), a New Deal initiative of President Franklin Roosevelt, tackled high unemployment and decades of land mismanagement and gave a generation of young Americans an insight on meaning of citizenship and community. The program coincided with the development of the Historic Triangle's historic resources, the restoration of CW, the creation of Colonial National Historical Park, and expansion of the College of W & M's campus. Description of the CCC camps and the policies re African-American enrolees are detailed. The CCC proved a model for more sophisticated postwar programs like Job Corps and AmeriCorps.
