CW's first Director of Archives and Records 1945-52, Lester Cappon, emphasized that original documents were central to the practice of history and archival theory and management. Thomas Jefferson had also been an archivist, purchasing from his cousin Peyton Randolph's estate, preserving and curating a collection of Jamestown records now in the Library of Congress. Jefferson's reliance on multiple copies extrapolates into archival science of the 21st century with Information Age potential for collections to grow exponentially. Comparisons about archival policies of CWF and various institutions and universities re conservation and preservation of original documents are made.
