Title The Cost of Criticism: America's Journey from the Suppression of Speech to the Freedom of Speech
Issue Volume 02, Number 01 (T&T, Winter 2017)
Description America's journey from suppression of freedom of speech was a long and difficult one as the law of seditious libel made it a crime to criticize government officials or policy. Rebellion against these laws began when a colonial jury rejected the 1735 charges against NY newspaper publisher John Peter Zenger.Protests against the Stamp Act in 1765 led to more dissent and protests and ultimately the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
