Description Diverse influences came together to create an American classic - barbecue (both the food and the event). Because hogs were prolific breeders and their meat was plentiful, barbecue firmly took root in Tidewater Virginia leading to a long tradition of feasting and outdoor celebration. The Spanish, Enslaved peoples, Indians, and early Europeans all influenced the methods and flavors.
