Description |
The iconic octagonal Powder Magazine that stands guard over Market Square and Duke of Gloucester Street fights the ravages of age. Built in 1715 by Governor Alexander Spotswood, is known for the Gunpowder Incident in 1775. After the capital moved to Richmond in 1780, the Magazine then served, among other things, as a merchant shop, church and dance studio, and stable. It is one of Colonial Williamsburg's original buildings. Restoration on the building was done in 1934-35. But, after 80 years, repairs to mortar and bricks is needed.
