Title The Humiliation of Lord Botetourt
Issue Volume 03, Number 02 (T&T, Spring 2018)
Description Poorly worded instructions in a letter from Secretary Hillsborough in Britain to Lord Botetourt and misinterpreted by Botetourt, regarding the Townsend Acts, led to a reprimand from Hillsborough. Botetourt kept up appearances, but divulged his tenuous situtation to the burgesses in a simple statement. His plight only increased his popularity in Virginia until his death in 1770.
