Description |
York County's court records are the source for many of Williamsburg stories, but have a remarkable story all their own. These county records tell the story of Virginia's beginnings and have been saved from oblivion by being removed from the courthouse in 1777 and stored at a clerks house, and again in 1862 when the clerk, Bolivar Shield, was caught behind Union lines and buried the records in an icehouse. They've been a research tool for the Historic Area and for the source of numberous scholary articles, books, and dissertations.
