Title Crossing Paths
Issue Volume 02, Number 04 (T&T, Autumn 2017)
Description The American Indian Initiative at Colonial Williamsburg, started in 2002, is committed to sharing the story of Native peoples and their relationship to early and modern America. The Initiative began with a focus on large scale events such as Return of the Cherokee, Beloved Women, and others that brought various Indian Nations to the Historic Area for limited engagements. After great success the Foundation shifted its focus to provide daily interactions with guests, hiring the first full-time Native American interpreters in 2014. At the new Indian Delegation location next to the magazine, guests can touch Native handicrafts, tools, and weapons, play games like stickball, and learn about the complex relationship American Indians had with the early colonists. The current American Indian Department, now six members, consists of those from many different tribal backgrounds, expanding guests’ understanding of Native peoples beyond the stereotypes portrayed in media. Guests can also learn more about a specific American Indian experience in the program Love and Loyalty.
