Title English Lessons
Issue Volume 02, Number 04 (T&T, Autumn 2017)
Description Although the Braffterton Indian School at the College of William and Mary was built specifically for the purpose of educating young Native Indians the ways of English culture and language, it never succeeded in the way its founders hoped. Virginians complained that the young men abandoned their learned customs as soon as they returned to their respective tribes. Native chiefs, on the other hand, lamented that the returning students were no longer fit to live among the tribes, having forgotten the skills of survival. The Brafferton building itslef has survived much better than historic buildings on the William and Mary campus.
