Title Negotiating a New World
Issue Volume 02, Number 04 (T&T, Autumn 2017)
Description The Brafferton School at the College of William and Mary was created to instruct young Native American men in English language, customs, and religion in order to create stronger relationships with the Native tribes. One of the most famous students at the Braffterton School was Henry Bawbee, son of the Wyandot chief, who first came to the school in 1775. After spending three years at the school, Bawbee was sent as an emissary to his father to build an alliance with Virginia. Henry Bawbee was discovered speaking against the Americans, as his tribe had decided to align with the British, and imprisoned. Bawbee eventually escaped and fought with his father on the British side, proving that an American education did automatically secure loyalty.
