Description |
The first elected legislature in the British Colonies was established in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619, as a way of making the Virginia Company's efforts more profitable. This first assembly, presided over by Governor George Yeardley, consisted of the governor himself, six appointed councilors, and 22 elected burgesses. This assembly continued to meet even after the Virginia Company was dissovled and Virginia became a royal colony, eventually growing into the House of Burgesses and then the House of Representatives and Senate that still govern today.
