Description |
The Fifth Virginia Convention resolved unanimously to instruct their delegates to the General Congress to propose independence from Great Britain. It then formed a committe to draft a Declaration of Rights and a plan for government. George Mason was a key author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, penning articles that influenced the Declaration of Independence and many of the provisions that would appear in the federal Bill of Rights. Committee members altered the language of Mason's articles that referred to slavery and religion to fit the mindset of the times. George Mason also defined citizenship as a set of responsibilities for the whole community.
