Title A New Face for an Iconic Place
Issue Volume 02, Number 03 (T&T, Summer 2017
Description Thanks to new evidence from archaeologists and architects, Colonial Williamsburg is restoring the porch of the Raleigh Tavern. The Raleigh Tavern was restored in 1932, the first building in the Historic Area open to the public. This first reconstruction, headed by Thomas Waterman, relied upon older drawings of the building and did not include a porch. Careful examination of the site and historical documentation has revealed that the Raleigh in fact had three different porches during its lifetime. This change to the iconic face of the Raleigh Tavern is part of Colonial Williamsburg's commitment to constantly share new information with guests.
