Description |
Americans still argue over what separation of church and state means in civic life. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution reads:"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" linking freedom of religion to freedom of speech, freedom of the press and the right to peaceful assembly. Washington, Jefferson and Madison believed freedom of religion was not a concession by the state or the established church, but a natural right of every citizen.
