John Anthony Robinson

Notes

  • Anthony Robinson, son of Anthony Russell of York County was a lawyer and was assisting William Russell in his official duties as of 1797. After he married Russell’s daughter Elizabeth, the two moved to Richmond where Anthony became assistant to William Wirt, then clerk of the House of Delegates. In 1802–03 they returned to live in Williamsburg where they owned property on Francis St. The family remained in Williamsburg until 1814 when Anthony began working in the office of the Auditor of Public Accounts in Richmond.
  • Elizabeth Russell was the daughter of William Russell (ca. 1741–1812) and Elizabeth Farrow Russell (ca. 1760–1785). Elizabeth Farrow was the daughter of Elizabeth and Benjamin Farrow of London and the niece of Margaret Hunter and Jane Hunter Charlton of Williamsburg. William Russell was a prosperous merchant who owned several properties in Williamsburg and held many public offices including Clerk of the Williamsburg Committee of Safety (1775), Clerk of the Williamsburg Hustings Court, 1783–1812 and Clerk of the Districk Court, 1791–1812 (?).
  • While the Bible originally belonged to Elizabeth Russell Robinson, at least some of the later entries were made by her son, John Anthony and/or his wife, Mary E. Ashlin Robinson.
  • Evelyn Carter Byrd Cabell (1842–1910) was the full name of “Eva Cabbell” who married William Russell Robinson. Financial and legal papers relating to the couple and their children, Wirt and Clifford Cabell Robinson, are part of the Cabell Family Papers, in the Virginia Historical Society.
  • Michael Benoit Poitiaux (1771–1854) married Elizabeth Russell Robinson’s sister Jane Russell in 1804. Poitiaux was born in Brussels and became a U.S. citizen soon after he moved to Richmond in 1798. He was a businessman, violinist and artist. That the Robinsons and Poitiauxs were close friends is shown in their naming both a daughter and son Poitiaux.
  • John Anthony Robinson left a widow, Mary, and two young sons, Ashlin (age 7) and Anthony (age 3). Ashlin died November 6, 1885 at age 17, while Anthony only survived him by four years, dying in November 1889 at age 19. Both boys died without children which caused a controversy between the widow and her in-laws over the will of John Anthony Robinson.
  • Greenwood in western Albemarle County was named Greenwood Depot in the community’s application for a post office in 1853. In 1913 the name was changed to Greenwood. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway runs by it.
