  • MS 2008.11
  • 1 item

A Formulary of that part of the Solemnity which is performed in the Collegiate Church of St. Peter, Westminster at the Coronation of HM Queen Anne. Bound in full red morocco tooled in gilt with a double fillet border and a panel of a double fillet and floral roll, with clusters of volutes and drawer-handle tools and a large square ornamental tool on each corner. All edges gilt; remains of silk ties; marbled endpapers. Klein attributes the binding to Robert Steel who apprenticed under Samuel Mearne. Cf. Klein, Benjamin. “A Coronation manuscript bound by Robert Steel, 1702.” The Book Collector (Winter, 2004).

This manuscript was probably intended to serve as a rehearsal document for the coronation of Queen Anne. It was most likely intended for one of the dignitaries taking part in the ceremony. There is another copy in the British Library with the words “Second Copy” above the title.
