Letter concerns credit for the above items which were paid with tobacco. Peter says that a man (Marable) of “your skill in accounts” must agree the account is just.

1 January 1760	Overseer agreement between Hartwell Marable and Lewis Adkins. Marable to give Adkins 500 lbs of pork; slaves: Frank, Jacob, Joe and Sukey to be shearers; 55 barrels of corn; 71 hogs; 10 cattle; and 9 sheep. Adkins will receive a fifth of the tobacco, a fifth of the stock‘s increase and a fifth of the corn.

9 February 1760	Overseer agreement between Edward Munford and Turner Jackson. Agreement gives Jackson use of three and a half shearers, one full share of the crop, cider, and every tenth hog he raises, and half the geese and feathers.

30 July 1760	Letter. Benjamin Marable to his brother, Henry Hartwell Marable. Benjamin Marable is safely arrived home. Henry Southall has “intended to your house.” Ben is in great need of a friend. He has no hopes of getting his money until Spring and is obliged to pay 25 pounds at Court on Wednesday. Begs to borrow money until Spring. Will suffer disgrace and expense of two lawsuits unless Marable “can be my friend.” Has heard “the fresh [floods] has been over your ground.” Both corn and tobacco is “drounded.” Half Brother George and family are well and much hurt with “the wet.” Hopes to find Marable and “sister” in good health.
28 September 1760	Letter. James Belsches to Mr. Marable. Has, according to an order sent Mr. Jones the sum the tobacco amounted to. Believes Marable to be in his debt on the account. Tells Marable he‘ll be surprised at the prices of nails, but the scarcity of iron and workmen in Bristol make them hard to get at any price. Will bring the Bristol invoice when he comes to Marable‘s house. “If you don‘t pay me for pr__zing your tobacco, I will drink out the value of it in your good cyder every time I go to Sussex Court.”

Massenburg so he‘ll deliver it at Court. Mr. Harrison has disappointed him again. Discusses need for cash and borrowing it from Marable until he can get payment from Mr. Edmunds or when a course of law can be finished.

Crews and his wife were to be at court to give Marable the right to the land. Crews feared the release was not sent. Upon being told it was sent Crews said he‘d meet his wife in court the next day.

Also a recipe for a possible animal ear problem: “Take about three pints of blood from the tail or inside of the thigh, take a pint of Brandy, _ a pint of vinegar, a spoonful of salt, as much antimoney as will lye on the pint of a cas knife. Drench him with this— Put a spoonful of Brandy in each ear, stop it in with cotton, tye a string round his ear to prevent him from shaking it out … they tell me there should be as much brimstone as antimoney and as much blustone as will contane to the bignes [?] of apu [?].”

I intended to have gone to see you yesterday if I could have got home in time, but as it happens its well I did not as I imagine your resentment had taken place before. I shall say no more but conclude according to your example. Nich. Massenburg. P.S. charge your things as you say, and interest if you please.”

1 October 1764	Bill of Sale for Bird, a slave. Thomas Briggs to Hartwell Marable. l October 1764 Letter. Benjamin Cocke, Swans Point, to Hartwell Marable. Cocke had planned to wait on his mistress but was seized with a sickness that nearly carried him “into eternity.” He has recovered, though, and hopes fortune will allow him to see the lady he loves. Yet he‘s still too sick to see her. He‘s sorry Marable didn‘t visit at James River. He hasn‘t seen him in many years. Asks Marable if he sees Jos. Smith to tell him he won‘t back out of the agreement for Smith to build a fence for his plantation. Respects to Mrs. Marable. P.S. “It is now dull times, no news from England, the Cr. of our Country is very lowe with them; and the sight of a ship up the River has not been seen lately.” Also note on tobacco.

He made more corn from 25 acres last year than he used to at his old place where he tended three times as much and five times the labor. “I understand that you are a courting of Cate Marrable as you call her if it is so make hast and marry her I think she will make you a fine wife and move out here for you can do much better here than in Charles City and move before you get a barrel [?] of children for they are very troublesom on the road. Mr. Griffith was here yesterday and all his family are well. Thomas and James are going to school—the old man appears to be very well pleased with his situation he has a plenty of dear around him. I have been to see him several times and kill dear for him as he cannot kill them himself.” Harwood requests that Major send word of his brother‘s health. He also hopes Major‘s mother‘s health is better.

John Minge Jr., Weyanok, to Madame [Amy Griffith]. “Yr note of this morning requesting me to make some arrangement relative to the wife of yr. man is received and the contents duly considered, in reply to it, give me leave to state that it is a matter which gives me great concern both as regards yourself and the poor woman, and I am truly sorry there is no alternative, either herself or her equal in value must be sold, a large demand on the estate in the way of legacies require it, and we have no other means unless we personally involve ourselves, these times are too precarious for that, I am perfectly willing to sell you the woman at her valuation on a credit of six months, yr note with satisfactory security will be all required of you, or I will give her for any negro of yours of equal value with herself & child that negro to be sold, if over the value of Caty & child is received for yours, then we will pay you the difference, if under, you must pay us the difference.
