Legal opinion of John Tyler concerning the estates of Thomas and William Griffith. “By the will of Thomas Griffith all his children living at the time of his death are equally interested in the division of the personal estate. W[illia]m. Griffith is dead and by his will his widow is entitled to the share which he would have taken had he outlived his mother.

“Mrs Griffith is said to have left the property of her own and I am ask‘d whether Mrs. Griffith[,] the widow of W[illia]m is entitled to any share in such property. I answer that she is not. The surviving children (and grandchildren where the brother or sister has died) are alone entitled.”

But when I looked and saw the company you were in I thought entreaties would be in vain an so differred it untill now. So my dear Catharine forsake this company for a while and set an example which [?] is wise [?] thy to be followed remain no longer a strainger to the blood that brought your pardon on the tree, believe me it will no lesson your pleasures but add greately to them and if it be the Almities will to spare you to be old with what delight you may look back to think that you[r] youth was devoted to the Lord. But I anticipate your thought at reading this. How can I refuse to accompany my young friends to parties of pleasure in which we have so often engaged, but reflect, can they afford relief in the hour of death no they cannot and why should we not wish to follow those dear friends and relations who have supplicated a throne of grace with tear and distresses for us rather than follow them that will serve to distress. Excuse the liberty I have taken Catharine and be assured that if I had not a tender regard for you I should not have wrote.

“I hope you will answer this and let me know your sentiments. Remember me affectionately to yo[ur] aunts and except the same yourself.

“I could say a greate deal more if time admit. Adieu dear cousin. Yours , Susan H. ____
