Albert Clarke letter to Rodolphus Clarke(1845 January 6)

Albert Clarke (1815–1897), a Massachusetts native and graduate of Amherst College, was a teacher at the Smithfield Academy, Isle of Wight County, 1836–1845. This academy operated from 1829–1861 and taught both boys and girls “all the branches of polite education.” (Alfred James Morrison, The Beginnings of Public Education in Virginia, 1776–1860, Joseph Martin, 1835 Gazetter of Virginia …). He left Virginia and was admitted to the bar in Massachusetts where he married and practiced law until 1852. Albert and Elizabeth Adams Clarke moved to Iowa in 1852.
