Robert Andrews letter from Williamsburg to General George Weedon at Gloucester dated September 26, 1781. Andrews informs Weedon that about 500 militia from Loudon County are on their way to reinforce him in Gloucester. He also informs Weedon that Governor Nelson has ordered all slaves taken from the enemy be returned to their masters remarking that “The Principle on which it is supposed men fight at present is to protect & secure to themselves & fellow Citizens their Liberties & Property, & not to procure Plunder.”

Robert Andrews was a colonial American clergyman originally from Pennsylvania. He was a professor at the College of William and Mary, member of the Virginia Committee of Safety, chaplain to the Virginia militia and private secretary to Thomas Nelson Jr. during the siege at Yorktown.
