Hartwell, Blair, and Chilton: “An Account of the Present State and Government of Virginia”

This report, sent to the Board of Trade by Henry Hartwell of the Council of Virginia; James Blair, president of the College of William and Mary; and Edward Chilton, attorney general of Virginia, discusses contemporary social, political, economic, and religious conditions in Virginia. One volume is the manuscript copy, used by the printer John Wyatt.

The Library also owns one of Wyatt’s first printed copies of The Present State of Virginia, and the College. By Mssrs. Hartwell, Blair, and Chilton. To which is added, The Charter for Erecting the said College, granted by their late Majesties King William and Queen Mary of Ever Glorious and Pious Memory. London: Printed for John Wyat, at the Rose in St. Paul’s Churchyard, M.DCC.XXVII [1727].
