Captain George Fleming’s orderly books of the Second Regiment of the Continental Artillery(1780–1782)

  • MS 2003.12
  • 2 vols.

Two orderly books kept by Captain George Fleming document the activities of the Second Regiment of Continental Artillery, known also as “Knox’s” (a reference to Brigadier General Henry Knox), from the years 1780 to 1782. Orderly books give details of camp life, for example: rules, regulations, duty assignments, illnesses, furloughs, court martials, and punishments.

The unit was assigned to the Hudson Highlands in New York, but was quickly dispatched to Virginia for operations countering the British Army. The regiment took part in the siege of Yorktown in 1781.
