Appraisement Estate of Richard Charlton Deceased(1780 January 7)

An inventory of the York County estate of Richard Charlton, including slaves, animals, and household items. Signed by Humpfrey Harwood, James Craig, and William Nicolson.

Richard Charlton, a barber-wigmaker, moved to Williamsburg by 1761. In 1765 he married Sally Satterwhite. Their daughter Jane was born the next year. In June 1767 he announced that he was keeping tavern at the Coffeehouse, but how long he remained there is uncertain. During the 1770s he was also a wigmaker. Charlton died several days before October 2, 1779, when a death notice appeared in the Virginia Gazette, “DEATHS … Mr. RICHARD CHARLTON of this city, after a lingering illness, last Monday died at Richmond, on his way from the Springs..” He requested in his will that his underage children, Jane, Edward and Thomas be under the guardianship of Robert Prentis and Dr. John Galt.

Richard Charlton’s Coffeehouse was reconstructed in Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area, 2008–09.
