This report was recorded by 0rin M. Bullock, Jr., November 15, 1932. It was reviewed and prepared for binding by A. Lawrence Kocher and Howard Dearstyne, August 10, 1951.

ARCHITECTURAL REPORT
OUTBUILDING SOUTH-EAST OF VEST HOUSE (KERR), CALLED "KITCHEN"
(A Restoration)
Block 9, Building 18

EXTERIOR

GENERAL NOTES

There is no evidence at the building to establish either its original use or date of erection. No formal report has been made on the property by the Research Department.

The building is located on property which did not pass into private hands until the middle nineteenth century and upon which no encroachments were made before 1780.

The "Frenchman's" map of 1786 shows a small building (not proved to be the same) which bears a similar relation to the Vest House of that date as the present building bears to the Vest House after its extension to the east.

The form of the chimney is late, possibly after 1810, and the framing adjacent thereto would seem to be contemporary with it.

The twentieth century addition to the east was removed.

The pitch of the roof was made steeper to adjust appearance to the eighteenth century. A twentieth century change had made it quite flat.

EXTERIOR PAINT COLORS

Body and Trim — Color #306. Doors and Shutters — Color #308.

2

NORTH AND SOUTH ELEVATION

SHINGLES

Mohawk asbestos.

CORNICE

New. Similar to cornice of the Emma Lou Barlow House, (Captain Orr's Dwelling).

GUTTER AND LEADER

No gutters or leaders. Bricks laid at grade to receive water from eaves and prevent spatter.

The northwest and southwest corner boards are original. The others are new of the same profile. See notes under East and West Elevations for end boards.

GENERAL NOTES

INTERIOR

GENERAL NOTES

The original plaster was applied on hand split lathes which were fastened with w. i. nails. The window frames were all in place although they had been half covered with boards. The original sash had disappeared. The simple moulded window trim was all. in place though damaged in part.

The first floor was in such bad condition it could not be used. The flooring on the second floor was largely perfect and was reused. The stair had been removed when the roof was lowered, but an original portion of soffit remained in the bath room and a portion of the base remained in the stair hall.
